Aghaji's Arrest Highlights Political Persecution of Kanu

Prof. Martin Aghaji, an emeritus professor of cardiac surgery and former president of the Nigerian Cardiac Society, was arrested on July 3, 2026.

Barrister Christoph Chidera, a member of Nnamdi Kanu's defense consortium, stated that Aghaji's arrest is proof of the politically motivated persecution of Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Chidera accused the Nigerian government of waging a war against truth and the rule of law.

Aghaji's arrest is believed to be connected to his independent medical report on Kanu's health, which contradicts the official version provided by the Department of State Services (DSS). Chidera emphasized that Aghaji's actions reflect a commitment to truth and integrity in the face of state intimidation.

He called for intervention from the UK government, asserting that Kanu cannot receive a fair hearing in Nigeria. Chidera urged international human rights organizations to take action regarding Aghaji's arrest and Kanu's detention.
