Protests in Nigeria Losing Relevance, Says Amadi

Amadi, the former chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), remarked on Monday that protests in Nigeria are gradually losing their relevance, suggesting that many demonstrators are hired to participate in rallies. His comments were made via Verifi in response to recent protests against former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Amadi expressed concern over the growing culture of monetizing dissent and questioned the sincerity of civic engagement in the country. The protests coincided with heightened tensions at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja, where demonstrators gathered at El-Rufai's invitation.

The protests included placards with messages such as "El-Rufai cannot hide behind politics; let the law catch up with him." Tensions reportedly escalated at the EFCC premises, leading to clashes with security forces, who deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd and restore order around the commission's headquarters.
