Rabies Outbreak Confirmed in Enugu Community

The Enugu State Government has confirmed a rabies outbreak in the Igbo Etiti Local Government Area, prompting an urgent public notice issued on Tuesday by Patrick Ubru, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization. The government warned residents about the high fatality rate associated with the viral disease, primarily transmitted through bites or saliva from infected animals, especially dogs.

The public is advised to exercise extreme caution and to vaccinate their pets against rabies without delay. Pet owners are instructed to confine their animals to prevent them from roaming freely in public spaces.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization has provided medical protocols for individuals who may come into contact with suspected rabid animals, urging anyone bitten or scratched to wash the wound thoroughly and seek immediate medical care. Residents are also encouraged to report any animals showing signs of aggression, excessive salivation, abnormal behavior, or paralysis to the nearest veterinary authority.
