Radiographers Association Rejects Bill Threatening Profession

The Radiographers Association of Nigeria, led by President Dr. Musa Dembel, has strongly opposed a legislative bill (HB 2695) intended to repeal and re-enact the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act of 2026.

During a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists press center in Kano, Dembel described the bill as an assault on the profession of radiography, warning that it seeks to transfer statutory responsibilities to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. He highlighted that Section 8(1) of the bill would grant the Council exclusive authority over radiography, effectively dismantling the Radiography Registration Board of Nigeria.

The association accused the bill of attempting to redefine radiography as a discipline under the Council's control, undermining its scientific independence. Dembel also raised concerns about another bill (HB 2699) aimed at amending the Radiography Registration Board, which could weaken the board's authority.

The association called for a summit to develop a regulatory framework that respects the co-equal status of health professions and urged the National Assembly to reject the bill entirely.
