Ramadan Fast Begins Today Amid Economic Challenges

The Ramadan fast for 2026 begins today, as confirmed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar III. The Sultan, who is also the chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, verified the sighting of the crescent moon, which marks the commencement of this holy month.

In his statement, he called on Muslims across Nigeria to engage in deep reflection, devotion, and supplication, especially in light of the prevailing economic challenges in the country. He urged Nigerians to seek divine intervention through prayer for peace, stability, and relief from hardship during Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting from dawn until sunset, increasing worship and charity.

Additionally, today marks the beginning of the Christian Lenten season, observed by Catholic denominations, starting with Ash Wednesday, which signifies a 40-day period of fasting and prayer leading to Easter.
