Ogun State Relocates Students Due to Methane Gas Leaks

Ogun State has taken the decision to temporarily relocate students from Ladi Apostolic Girl Grammar School in Ijebu Ode following repeated incidents of methane gas leaks that have raised health concerns. Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this during a spot assessment of the school, noting preliminary findings that confirmed the presence of methane gas in the area.

The relocation was deemed necessary to safeguard the health and safety of students, teachers, and the school community while experts conduct a thorough investigation into the source of contamination. The Ogun State Ministry of Environment and Health, along with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority and Olabisi Onabanjo University, are involved in determining the root cause of the incidents.

There have been two recorded cases of gas pollution affecting the school, with 40 students hospitalized after the first incident in April and an additional 69 students hospitalized following a second occurrence on June 1. The governor reassured the public that necessary measures would be taken to identify the pollution source and prevent recurrence.
