Reps Committee Urges DisCos to Settle Outstanding Debts

The House of Representatives Committee on Power, led by Chairman Victor Nwokolo, has urged electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to urgently address their outstanding market obligations. This call was made during an oversight visit to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) headquarters in Abuja, where a public hearing on the debts of the DisCos was conducted.

The hearing was chaired by NISO’s Executive Director of Market Operations, Engineer Edmond Eje. The affected DisCos include Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC), Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO), Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC), and Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO).

Nwokolo expressed concern over the accumulation of debts, stating that failure to meet financial obligations could harm the electricity market's liquidity and sustainability. Engineer Abdu Bello Mohammed, Managing Director/CEO of NISO, praised the Committee's oversight role and discussed the importance of collaboration in addressing challenges within the sector.
