Reps Investigate ₦97m Fraud at Disability Commission

The House of Representatives' Committee on Disabilities commenced an investigation into the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities regarding alleged financial irregularities linked to a ₦97 million Point of Sale (PoS) contract. The investigation was prompted by complaints from the disability community, with members expressing concerns about the commission's procurement practices.

During the hearing, Chairman Bashiru Dawodu emphasized the need for clarification on the contract award process. Abdullahi Ibrahim, representing the disability community, described the commission's financial practices as increasingly worrying, alleging that the cost of the PoS machines was inflated.

The commission's Executive Secretary, Ayuba Gufwan, explained that upon assuming office on August 6, 2024, he discovered irregularities in contract awards made by his predecessor. He stated that the contracts were nullified and a new procurement process initiated.

Gufwan also highlighted the commission's challenges, including inadequate funding and the lack of zonal offices, which hindered their ability to serve persons with disabilities effectively.
