Unruly Passenger Behavior Threatens Nigerian Air Travel Safety

Unruly passenger behavior has emerged as a major challenge in Nigerian air travel, according to Professor Obiora Okonkwo, Chairman of the Nigerian Airlines. He noted that incidents of disruption not only inconvenience travelers but also pose direct threats to safety and order at airports.

The phenomenon has escalated, with passengers becoming bolder in defying airport rules, leading to verbal and physical confrontations with airline staff. Okonkwo cited a notable incident in January 2025, where passengers revolted against Medview Airlines at Lagos Airport due to a flight cancellation, resulting in damage to airline equipment and harassment of staff.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have acknowledged the issue and are advocating for stricter enforcement of regulations to restore order. They emphasize that unruly behavior undermines public trust in the aviation sector, which is built on predictability and control.

The authorities are considering fines and potential travel restrictions for offenders as part of their response.
