Activist Demands NIMASA Compliance with FOI Request

Barr Frank Tieti, the Executive Director of Citizen Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER), has formally addressed a letter to Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine Economy, regarding the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

The letter highlights NIMASA's noncompliance with a Freedom of Information (FOI) request made on February 20, 2026, which sought public records related to the safeguarding of female staff within the agency. Tieti emphasized that NIMASA is legally required to respond to FOI requests within seven days, either by providing the requested information or stating specific statutory exemptions.

The lack of response constitutes a breach of the FOI Act. Tieti warned that if NIMASA does not comply within seven days of receiving the letter, CASER will initiate enforcement proceedings in the Federal High Court.

The letter also addresses concerns about workplace misconduct and the need for policies to protect female employees from retaliatory actions.
