Health Risks Rise as Refuse Accumulates in Owerri

The accumulation of refuse in Owerri, Imo State, has sparked significant health concerns, particularly regarding a potential outbreak of Lassa fever. The situation has deteriorated due to recent rainfall, which has exacerbated the stench from decomposing waste and caused traffic congestion along major roads, including Douglas Road and Egbu Road.

The Eastern Waste Management Company (EWMAC) has been called to address the refuse issue, although they have not specified when the waste will be cleared. Residents have expressed frustration on social media, with comments highlighting the poor waste management in the state.

Martin Ogunlad, the Director of Climate Corporate Account Public Participation Africa, described the situation as a creeping disaster, noting that uncollected waste blocks drainage systems, leading to flooding and creating habitats for disease vectors such as rats and mosquitoes. He warned of the health impacts, including respiratory illnesses and the potential for diseases like malaria and cholera, urging authorities to prioritize waste disposal and implement proactive policies.
