Low Voter Turnout in Rivers By-election Amid Apathy

The by-election held on a Saturday in Ahoada and Khana constituencies of Rivers State saw a notably low voter turnout. In Ahoada East, specifically at Poll Unit 1, only 13 out of 800 registered voters cast their ballots by 1:25 PM.

Similar low turnout was reported across seven polling units visited. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) noted that the electoral process was peaceful and orderly, with necessary materials and personnel in place.

Gabriel Yomer, the state commissioner, indicated that voter apathy was largely due to the disqualification of major opposition parties, including the People's Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Labour Party (LP), from participating in the election. INEC had conducted extensive voter sensitization campaigns, including meetings with local government leadership and traditional rulers, as well as radio jingles, to encourage participation.

However, these efforts did not significantly increase voter turnout.
