Rivers CP Dismisses DPO Over Extortion Allegations

Olugbenga Adepoju, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, has removed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Oyigbo Local Government Area due to allegations of extortion and abuse of office. The removal followed claims from a human rights activist that the DPO extorted 500,000 Naira from an individual and unlawfully detained a woman at the police station without any known offense.

The activist provided evidence of the payment on social media, alleging that the DPO preferred to describe the charges against the woman, who was accused of stealing her own children amid a dispute with her estranged husband, as ridiculous. The woman was subsequently remanded in custody.

In a statement issued by Bless Agab, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, it was confirmed that the complaint against the DPO was received, and the command is committed to transparency and accountability. The Commissioner assured the public that a thorough and impartial investigation would be conducted into the allegations.
