Delta Police Demote Officers for Extortion Misconduct

On January 13, 2026, Delta State Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi upheld the findings of an orderly room trial against Inspector Augustin Jeremiah and Corporal Miracl Ehirim of the Delta State Police. The officers were found guilty of misconduct, specifically disobeying lawful orders and extorting money from motorists through a point-of-sale terminal within the police station.

As a consequence, Inspector Jeremiah was demoted to the rank of Sergeant, and Corporal Ehirim was demoted to Constable. Commissioner Oyeniyi reiterated the Inspector General of Police's zero-tolerance policy towards extortion and professional misconduct, emphasizing that officers are prohibited from demanding money from the public.

He urged the police command to maintain the highest standards of professional integrity and respect for citizens' rights. The public was encouraged to report any cases of police misconduct to designated contact numbers.
