RMAFC Pushes Taxpayer Safeguards in Revenue System Overhaul

Nigeria's fiscal commission emphasizes protecting taxpayers while reforming revenue distribution across federal, state and local governments.

The Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission has placed taxpayer protection at the centre of ongoing reforms to Nigeria's revenue system. Dr.

Mohammed Bello Shehu, the commission's chairman, made this position clear during a meeting with officials from the Joint Revenue Board, stressing that any restructuring of how government collects and distributes money must safeguard the interests of those paying taxes. Shehu stated that the commission remains committed to building a revenue administration framework rooted in openness and accountability.

He noted that success in the current reform effort depends significantly on cooperation between all institutions involved in revenue generation and management across Nigeria's three tiers of government. The visit from the Joint Revenue Board delegation on 9 June underscored the level of engagement among these bodies as reform discussions continue.

According to Shehu, equitable allocation of revenue among federal, state, and local government levels is a core objective. The reforms aim to ensure that the distribution system functions fairly and that stakeholders—including taxpayers—understand how their contributions are being used.

The commission's head of public relations, Maryam Yusuf, confirmed these statements in an official statement released following the meeting. The RMAFC reception of the Joint Revenue Board delegation reflects the practical collaboration required to advance these reforms.

No specific timeline for implementation or concrete policy changes were announced in the available statements. The commission indicated that continued stakeholder engagement would be essential as these reform proposals develop.
