African Leaders Urge Action on Rising Road Fatalities

During a ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday, the Director General of Benin's road safety agency emphasized the urgent need for coordinated action among African leaders to tackle the continent's rising road traffic fatalities. The event marked the inauguration of the secretariat for the African Association of Road Safety Lead Agencies (AARSLA).

The Director General highlighted that Africa records approximately 27 road traffic deaths per 100,000 inhabitants annually, one of the highest rates globally, and stressed that these figures represent not just statistics but the profound impact on families and communities. He noted that no single country can address this crisis in isolation and advocated for deeper regional cooperation.

Benin's long-standing commitment to road safety was acknowledged, including its role as a founding member of the West African Road Safety Organization and its recent position as the first Vice President of AARSLA. The Director General commended the World Bank for its support and urged stakeholders to seize the momentum created by the secretariat's launch to implement effective measures to reduce road crashes and save lives across Africa.
