Varvara Voronchikhina Wins Russia's First Paralympic Gold

Varvara Voronchikhina, a 23-year-old skier from Russia, secured the nation's first gold medal at the Winter Paralympics since 2014 by winning the women's Super-G event in Cortina. She triumphed over French silver medalist Aureli Richard by a margin of 1.96 seconds.

This victory is significant as it marks Russia's return to the podium after a 12-year absence in the Winter Games, following a doping scandal that led to a ban in 2018. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) allowed six Russian athletes and four Belarusian representatives to compete under their national flags, despite the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Mikhail Degtyarev, Russia's sports minister, celebrated the achievement and announced that the Russian anthem would be played during the podium ceremony. Voronchikhina had previously won a bronze medal in the downhill event last weekend and expressed hope for better games in the future.
