Russian Chess Official Dies After Nigeria Trip

Sergei Indeikin, aged 36, served as an operational manager and delegate for the International Chess Federation (FIDE). He traveled to Abuja, Nigeria, for the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships held from August 1 to 8.

Following his trip, he traveled to Uzbekistan, where he began to feel ill. His father, Alexander Indeikin, reported that symptoms indicated malaria, and despite being vaccinated before his trip, the vaccine did not guarantee complete protection.

After traveling to Moscow and then to Perm to join his mother, his condition worsened, leading to hospitalization. Unfortunately, he could not be saved.

FIDE announced his death on August 23, describing it as a result of a “sudden illness” without specifying the medical condition at that time. The organization expressed deep sadness over his passing.
