Sahara Group Promotes LPG for Africa's Energy Security

Sahara Group has positioned Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as Africa's fastest path to energy access and security, according to Wale Ajibad, Executive Director of Sahara Group. During a leadership roundtable at the African Refining Distributor Association (ARDA) 2026 event, Ajibad highlighted LPG's suitability as a transitional fuel for Africa's development realities.
He noted that nearly one billion people in Sub-Saharan Africa lack access to clean cooking solutions, which LPG can address. Despite Africa accounting for only 4% of global LPG consumption, Ajibad emphasized the continent's need for solid LPG infrastructure to unlock growth.
He called for harmonized LPG import duties, standardized cylinder regulations, and a bankable storage and distribution framework to promote household adoption. Sahara Group has been actively involved in building LPG infrastructure across Africa, delivering six million cubic meters of LPG across West Africa since 2017 and supporting the expansion of LPG carrier fleets and storage capacity.
