Sambisa Forest Size Complicates Kidnap Victim Rescues

General Christopher Musa (retd.), the Minister of Defence, attributed delays in rescuing kidnap victims to the vast size and challenging terrain of forests, particularly Sambisa Forest, which he compared to the size of Belgium. During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he explained that the expansive nature of these forests allows terrorists and kidnappers to evade security forces after attacks.

Musa noted that while security agencies are regularly rescuing abducted Nigerians, the challenge lies in quickly locating victims, as kidnappers retreat deep into the forests before information reaches troops. He mentioned a recent operation in Kwara State where troops restricted the movement of abductors, leading to successful rescues.

Musa also highlighted the monitoring of financial transactions linked to kidnapping, stating that ransom payments could provide intelligence to trace kidnappers. He advised state governors and lawmakers to reconsider the distribution of high-capacity motorcycles, warning that some could be misused.
