Anambra Sand Miners Protest Alleged Extortion by State Government

Sand miners in Onitsha, Anambra State, represented by the Onitsha Sand Miners Association, protested against alleged extortion and harassment by Anambra State government agencies, particularly the Ocha Brigade. They claim to be under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government through the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and accuse state agencies of disrupting their operations, arresting workers, and impounding equipment.

The miners, led by Christoph Mbaegbu, demanded proof of registration and accused the Anambra State Solid Minerals Development Company Limited (ASSMDCL) of colluding with state agencies in extortion. They called on Governor Prof.

Chukwuma Soludo to intervene. The miners insist on their right to mine under federal authority and seek protection from alleged state-level extortion and harassment.
