Saudi Arabia Sacks Coach Renard Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Hervé Renard has been relieved of his duties as the head coach of the Saudi Arabian national football team, just weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 57-year-old French coach confirmed his dismissal and expressed mixed emotions, stating he took pride in the team's achievements.

Renard's first tenure with Saudi Arabia lasted from 2019 to 2023, during which he led the team to a historic group stage victory against Argentina in the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar. His departure follows the exit of Roberto Mancini, who left after an underwhelming 14-month spell.

Reports indicate that former Greek international Georgio Doni is being considered as Renard's replacement, with negotiations ongoing between the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and Doni. The Saudi team is scheduled to compete in Group H of the 2026 World Cup, facing Spain, Uruguay, and Cape Verde, and will prepare under new leadership for the global tournament.
