Plateau State Faces Risk of High-Intensity Conflict

SB Morgen Intelligence (SBMI) has issued a warning regarding the potential escalation of reprisal attacks between armed Fulani and Berom/Mwaghavul groups in Plateau State, particularly in Mangu Local Government Area. This warning is part of the SBM Intel Security Report covering violent incidents from August 14 to 20, 2026.

The report indicates that violence has persisted at low to medium intensity since late 2025, with recent incidents increasing the risk of further escalation. SBMI identified Mangu and Barkin Ladi LGAs as highly volatile due to a series of attacks involving Fulani herders and local farming communities.

The attack on Bin-Per community in Kombun District, where at least 23 people were killed, was likely a reprisal for an earlier attack on herders in Naben village. The report also connects the killing of a young woman in Gana Ropp to ongoing violence and warns that criminal groups may exploit the unrest.

SBMI noted that military pressure on Boko Haram and ISWAP is pushing them towards rural communities, increasing the risk of opportunistic raids.
