Lagos Governor Orders Probe into Bridge Vandalism

On Friday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered an investigation into the vandalism of a bridge linking Alakija to FESTAC, where scavengers had stripped iron bars from the pillars. This act raised significant safety concerns for motorists and road users.

A viral video revealed extensive damage to the bridge, prompting the governor to direct security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible. Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, condemned the vandalism as “barbaric, criminal and uncivilised,” emphasizing that bridges are critical public infrastructure.

He stated that the government had already conducted clearance operations under bridges and would extend these efforts to prevent criminal activities. Following a midnight enforcement operation, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the arrest of 27 individuals connected to the vandalism.

The state government is committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of public infrastructure.
