IGP Disu Calls for National Security Focus on School Safety

Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the Inspector-General of Police, stated that the safety of educational institutions should be treated as a national security priority. Speaking at the 7th Annual Summit of the Education Writers’ Association of Nigeria (EWAN) in Lagos, he called for a shift from reactive responses to preventive measures in addressing security threats against schools.
Disu highlighted that sustainable protection requires intelligence-led policing, early detection of threats, effective emergency preparedness, and collaboration among security agencies, school administrators, parents, community leaders, and the media. He noted that insecurity in schools has broader consequences, disrupting academic activities and undermining public confidence.
Disu emphasized that school safety is a collective obligation and that while responding to incidents is crucial, lasting protection must focus on prevention and addressing vulnerabilities. He affirmed that the Nigeria Police Force would enhance intelligence gathering, improve communication with schools, identify security gaps, and encourage prompt reporting of credible threats.
