Security Forces Abandon Checkpoints in Kebbi State

Security operatives, including officers from the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigerian Army, and Nigeria Police Force, have abandoned their checkpoints along Kamba Road in Kebbi State due to ongoing attacks by Lakurawa terrorists. Previously, there were about 20 checkpoints between Unguwar Jeji in Kalgo Local Government Area and Kamba in Dandi Local Government Area.

However, many have been deserted, facilitating smuggling activities from neighboring Niger and Benin Republics. Key checkpoints that have been abandoned include Dangoma 1 and 2, Sabon Birni, and several Maidahini checkpoints.

Residents report that the withdrawal of security personnel has left communities vulnerable to bandit attacks, with the last military checkpoint in Bunza town recently overrun by terrorists. SP Bashir Usman, the Police Public Relations Officer for Kebbi State, stated that some checkpoints were intentionally collapsed and others fortified to enhance operations, asserting that the reduction in static checkpoints does not indicate a decrease in security presence.
