Senator Ayo Arise Urges Media to Ensure Accountability

Former lawmaker Senator Ayo Arise, who represented Ekiti North Senatorial District from 2007 to 2011, called on the media to ensure public officials fulfill their duties. He made this statement during his lecture titled ‘Internal Party Democracy, Good Governance, The Media and the Future Of Nigeria Democracy’ at the 2026 Annual Lecture/Award organized by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Arise highlighted the media's critical role in the democratic process, emphasizing the importance of informing citizens and questioning those in power. He noted that government coverage should include both criticisms and commendations to foster national development.

Additionally, he advocated for deeper internal party democracy, stating that the quality of Nigeria's democracy is largely dependent on the candidates produced by political parties, which serve as the primary gateway for Nigerians to access elective public offices.
