Senate Probes NSC Over Absence from Financial Inquiry

On July 22, 2026, the Senate's Committee on Sports Development, chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi from Bauchi Central, questioned the National Sports Commission (NSC) for not attending a scheduled probe. Ningi stated that invitation letters were sent separately to the chairman and director-general of the NSC to clarify who should appear.

He deemed the NSC's explanations for their absence as unacceptable, emphasizing that the committee would not tolerate actions that hinder its constitutional oversight responsibilities. The committee members supported Ningi's stance, insisting that NSC officials must appear to clarify financial and operational issues.

The committee directed the NSC to provide evidence of approved budgets for 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026, along with details of budget releases and funds allocated to various sporting federations, including football and basketball. Additionally, Ningi instructed the Clerk of the Committee to request comprehensive records from the Accountant-General of the Federation regarding all releases to the NSC since 2023.

A new date for the NSC officials to appear will be communicated.
