Senator Ndume Advocates for Part-Time Senate Structure

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, called for major reforms in Nigeria's legislative system during an interview on Trust TV. He proposed that members of the National Assembly serve on a part-time basis instead of full-time, arguing that lawmakers should not earn a fixed monthly salary but rather receive payments based on their attendance at plenary sessions and committee meetings.

Ndume raised concerns about the current structure of the National Assembly, stating that it incurs unnecessary costs for the government, as lawmakers do not operate like regular civil servants. He noted that the assembly often goes into recess, suggesting that senators should be paid for the days they are in session rather than receiving a salary when not actively engaged.

Additionally, Ndume warned against rushing legislation on sensitive issues such as state policing, emphasizing the need for wider consultation and careful debate before reaching decisions.
