SERAP Calls for Probe into INEC Chairman's Social Media Row

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has demanded that the Nigerian National Assembly conduct a thorough investigation into allegations surrounding a social media post linked to Joash Amupitan, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). SERAP argues that the integrity and credibility of INEC are essential for the legitimacy of Nigeria's electoral process.

They stress that the National Assembly has constitutional authority under sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to investigate public officials and expose corruption and inefficiency. SERAP insists that lawmakers must adhere to international human rights instruments, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, to ensure accountability and transparency.

The allegations have reportedly undermined public trust in INEC, especially ahead of future elections. INEC has denied ownership of the controversial social media account and described the viral screenshots as part of a misinformation campaign aimed at discrediting the electoral body.
