Shaibu Critiques Quality at 2026 Federation Cup Final

At the 2026 Federation Cup final held on July 11 at Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, El Kanemi Warriors triumphed over Ikorodu City with a score of 1-0, securing their fourth Federation Cup title. Muktari Ismail was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament after converting a first-half penalty.

Following the match, Shaibu, a former deputy governor of Edo State, criticized the overall quality of football displayed, stating that both teams lacked the necessary standards to represent Nigeria effectively. He pointed out significant issues such as inconsistency, poor tactical organization, and a lack of depth in local football.

Shaibu emphasized that the performance did not provide sufficient evidence that local players could compete at international levels, making it challenging for home-based players to be selected for the national team in favor of foreign counterparts.
