Shettima Returns from BRICS Summit to Boost Nigeria-India Trade

Vice President Kashim Shettima returned to Nigeria on 15 September 2026 after a diplomatic and economic mission in India, where he represented President Bola Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi. During his visit, Shettima engaged with key global economic and political figures, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to explore opportunities for strengthening Nigeria-India economic relations.

Discussions focused on areas such as crude oil trade, investment, pharmaceuticals, defence, digital technology, fintech, and renewable energy. Shettima delivered a message from President Tinubu advocating for reforms in global governance and international financial institutions, positioning Nigeria as a strategic gateway to Africa's market under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

He also met with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, reaffirming Nigeria's commitment to multilateralism. The engagements aimed to open new avenues for investment and economic cooperation, reinforcing Nigeria's role in the evolving global economic landscape.
