Shiite Movement Plans Nationwide Ashura Processions in 2026

The Islam Movement Nigeria, popularly known as the Shiite movement and led by Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaki, has announced its plan to hold Ashura processions across Nigeria on June 26, 2026. This event, which marks the martyrdom of Imam Husain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, will occur in 600 towns and villages across 23 states, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by Ammar Muhammad Rajab, representing the movement's media forum. The Ashura processions are set to align with the 11th day of Muharram 1448 AH, commemorating the historical tragedy of Karbala in 680 AD.

The movement emphasizes that Ashura symbolizes resistance against oppression and reaffirms values of justice and truth. The annual observance has been a significant event for the Shiite community in Nigeria, attracting thousands of participants who carry banners and chant messages centered on justice and sacrifice.
