Shiites to Hold Nationwide Ashura Processions in Nigeria

The Islam Movement Nigeria, under the leadership of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaki, has announced plans to hold nationwide Ashura processions on Friday, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Husain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. These processions are set to take place in 600 towns and villages across 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The statement issued by the movement's media team indicates that the processions will align with Muharram 11, 1448 AH, which corresponds to the commemoration of the events at Karbala, Iraq, where Imam Husain was killed in 680 AD. The annual Ashura observance is of significant religious importance to Shia Muslims worldwide, particularly in Nigeria, where the Islam Movement has organized these processions for three decades.

Historically, these events attract large crowds in major cities, raising concerns regarding public order and security.
