US Strikes Iranian Oil Tankers After Missile Attack

On September 5, the United States military escalated its confrontation with Iran by destroying three Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for a ballistic missile attack by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on two US Navy warships. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that the American warships successfully evaded the missile attacks without sustaining injuries or damage.

The US response targeted three oil carriers associated with a network supporting the IRGC, with one tanker permanently disabled off Kharg Island, another disabled near Jask, and a third destroyed in the Gulf of Oman. Admiral Brad Cooper, Commander of CENTCOM, stated that the strikes were a deliberate economic response to Iran's military actions, emphasizing that if Iran attacked US ships, the US would impose a higher economic cost.

The strikes signify a shift in US strategy, targeting Iran's oil lifeline to restrict its military funding and operations across the Middle East.
