‘Slavish’ – ASUU rejects Nigerian Govt’s loans for staff of tertiary institutions

ASUU has rejected the Nigerian government's Tertiary Institution Staff Support Loan Scheme (TISSLS), calling it a diversion tactic from implementing a renegotiated agreement. The scheme offers academic staff in Nigerian tertiary institutions loans of up to N10 million.

ASUU criticized the government for not honoring the 2009 agreement and instead offering loans, which they described as a "slavish insult." The union expressed concerns about the government's priorities, questioning why funds were not used to improve salaries and stabilize payments. ASUU highlighted grievances such as outdated salary structures, inadequate infrastructure, and interference in university affairs.

They called for the immediate implementation of the renegotiated agreement, payment of outstanding salaries, and reforms to ensure proper use of funds for research and academic development.
