Yobe LG Vice Chairman Alleges Assault by Soldiers

Abubakar Muhammad Nur, the Vice Chairman of Geidam Local Government Area in Yobe State, reported an assault by soldiers from the Nigerian Army while he was on official duty on Friday. The incident occurred in the context of increased security tensions in Geidam due to an exchange of gunfire between security forces and suspected Boko Haram terrorists.

Nur stated that he was trying to assess the situation after observing residents fleeing the town. Despite identifying himself as the vice chairman, he was allegedly beaten by the soldiers from the 159 Battalion, resulting in injuries including a forehead wound that caused heavy bleeding and a serious injury to his hand.

Nur mentioned that he was receiving treatment at an emergency room when he communicated the incident to reporters. He expressed concern over the soldiers' indiscriminate assaults on residents, noting that no official curfew had been declared in the area.
