South American Federations Support Infantino's Fourth Term

On Thursday, Alejandro Dominguez, the president of CONMEBOL, announced the unanimous support of South American federations for Gianni Infantino's potential bid for a fourth term as FIFA president. This marks the first formal backing from a confederation for Infantino, who is currently serving his third term after being re-elected in 2023.

Infantino first assumed office in 2016, succeeding Sepp Blatter, and has been re-elected twice unopposed during his tenure. At 56 years old, Infantino has overseen significant reforms, including the expansion of the FIFA World Cup to 48 teams and has increased FIFA's development footprint in South America, which continues to host the third highest number of FIFA tournaments during his era.

Dominguez praised Infantino's contributions to football development and expressed the region's support for his broader vision for the sport. FIFA's forward program reports that South America benefits from 64 football development projects worth $30 million across ten CONMEBOL member associations since 2016.
