Sowore Remanded in Kuje as Court Revokes Bail, Dismisses Recusal Bid

Federal High Court Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Omoyele Sowore detained at Kuje Correctional Centre after revoking his bail over missed court appearances in…
At the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, Justice Mohammed Umar issued a ruling that revoked Sowore's bail and resulted in his remand at Kuje Correctional Centre. Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress presidential candidate, arrived in custody after a bench warrant was executed against him for failing to attend his scheduled court hearings.
The judge's decision to revoke the previously granted bail followed Sowore's absence from proceedings. Social media posts allegedly describing President Bola Tinubu in criminal language form the basis of this legal case.
Under the Cybercrime Act, the Department of State Services has brought charges against Sowore. His legal team contends that he was exercising constitutionally protected political expression and has challenged the allegations.
During the Monday session, Sowore's representatives filed an application requesting that Justice Umar recuse himself from the matter, claiming bias and improper conduct. This recusal request was rejected by the court.
The defence also voiced objections regarding what they described as hostile conduct throughout the hearings, though no detailed specifics were provided in the record. Adeyinka Olumide Fusika, serving as new counsel, took over Sowore's case.
Outside the courtroom, DSS officers prevented entry to individuals who came to support Sowore, restricting movement around the court building. Online videos documented these officers blocking supporters from accessing the premises alongside the activist.
Proceedings have been scheduled for June 24, when arguments will be heard on a motion seeking to reverse the bail revocation. Sowore will remain incarcerated at the correctional facility until that date.
