Concerns Raised Over Food Products Lacking Heart Label

Stakeholders have expressed concerns regarding food products that do not carry the heart label, a program initiated by the Nigerian Heart Foundation (NHF) in collaboration with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) since 2003. This initiative aims to assist consumers in identifying healthier food options as cardiovascular diseases continue to rise in Nigeria, driven by unhealthy diets.

During the launch of the heart mark logo award program in Lagos, NHF Executive Director Dr. Kingsley Akinroy emphasized the importance of labeling food products.

The heart mark logo serves as a reliable guide for consumers to make healthier choices. NAFDAC's Director General, Prof.

Mojisola Adeyeye, noted that the agency will ensure food products meet health standards before they can carry the heart mark. The NHF plans to commence the award program from April 14 to May 15, 2026, to address the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases in Nigeria.
