AI Chatbot Moma Enhances Maternal Healthcare in Africa

Solayo Africa, a health tech startup, has launched an AI-powered chatbot named Moma to improve maternal healthcare across Africa. Founded by Oladiipo Damilola (CEO and co-founder), alongside Theresa Oyewole and Georg Odiana, the platform utilizes WhatsApp technology to provide scalable maternal healthcare services.

Women in rural Lagos can access personalized support by messaging "Hi Moma," receiving tailored responses to their pregnancy-related queries. The initiative aims to address the high maternal mortality rate in Nigeria, which accounts for 28.5% of global maternal deaths, with a 1 in 19 lifetime risk of death during pregnancy or childbirth.

Moma tracks pregnancy development, offers breastfeeding advice, and connects users with healthcare professionals when necessary. The platform also includes a marketplace for maternal products and aims to bridge the gap in healthcare access, particularly in rural areas, where 72% of maternal deaths occur outside health facilities.

Solayo Africa's approach reflects the realities faced by pregnant women in managing their healthcare needs.
