IGP Olatunji Disu Advocates for State Police in Nigeria

Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu proposed the establishment of state police during an interview in New York, stating that it would strengthen community policing and improve intelligence gathering. He noted that this initiative aims to enhance collaboration between federal and state security institutions and bring the police closer to the people, thereby improving the overall security architecture of the country.

Disu acknowledged that implementing state police would require extensive consultation and capacity building, referencing comparative studies of countries that already operate similar systems. He emphasized the need for a police structure that enables officers to develop a better understanding of community service, which would strengthen intelligence gathering and public confidence.

Disu reaffirmed his commitment to making the Nigeria Police Force a professional body and highlighted the importance of innovative strategies and partnerships to sustain peace and stability in the nation. He also discussed Nigeria's long-standing contributions to global peacekeeping operations, noting that the country has deployed police officers and troops on UN missions since 1960.
