Ex-police Chief Advocates Intelligence-Led Policing in Nigeria

Chief Tunji Alapini, a retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, called for a fundamental shift in Nigeria's security architecture, advocating for intelligence-led policing to effectively tackle the country's rising insecurity. Speaking in Ibadan, Oyo State, during the keynote lecture at the 19th anniversary of Splash FM 105.5 and the 87th birthday celebration of Oba Murtala Adebayo Akande, Alapini highlighted that security is essential for national development.

He noted that Nigeria's security challenges have evolved to include terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, cybercrime, cultism, communal conflicts, arms trafficking, and organized crime. Alapini attributed the worsening situation to factors such as youth unemployment, economic hardship, poor intelligence coordination, and corruption.

He recommended establishing structured community intelligence networks, deploying surveillance technology, and enhancing emergency response systems. The event was also attended by Oba Akande, who expressed gratitude for reaching his 87th birthday through his son, Mr. Bayo Akande Jr.
