Teacher Arrested for Setting Wife Ablaze in Kogi

On August 14, 2026, a teacher and self-identified ordained pastor from Irawo village, currently on vacation in Lokoja, was arrested by the Kogi State Police Command for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, ablaze. The incident occurred after a domestic disagreement regarding the husband's missing short-sleeved shirts.

The husband reported that upon returning home and finding his shirts missing, he confronted his wife, who admitted to burning them out of frustration. In a fit of anger, he fetched petrol from his motorcycle, poured it on her, and ignited it with matches.

The police received the report of the incident at approximately 2030 hours. ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the police spokesperson, confirmed that the victim survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Felele.

The police have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
