Shoprite's Exit to Create N2.5 Trillion Economic Vacuum

Shoprite is set to exit Nigeria by March 2026, marking the end of a two-decade presence that significantly influenced the country's modern consumer culture. The closure is expected to create an economic vacuum estimated at N2.5 trillion, affecting workers, suppliers, and the overall retail ecosystem.

Shoprite's departure will lead to a sharp decline in customer traffic across the malls it operates, with smaller retailers reporting a steep drop in sales. For instance, a shoe vendor at Ikeja Mall noted a revenue drop from over N2.5 million to below N1 million.

The exit will also disrupt the supply chain, as Shoprite has been a reliable buyer for Nigerian farmers and food producers. Thousands of employees, including cashiers, warehouse staff, and security personnel, will lose stable incomes, pushing many into informal work or unemployment.

The closure poses challenges for real estate developers and landlords, who may struggle to fill the vacant spaces left by Shoprite.
