Oluremi Tinubu Donates N2 Billion to Akwete Weaving

During her recent visit to Abia State, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of the President, announced a donation of N2 billion to support the Akwete weaving industry, which is rooted in the local culture and history. The Akwete cloth, traditionally hand-woven by women in Akwete-Ndoki, Ukwa East Local Government Area, has a legacy dating back to the 18th century, with Dada Nwakata recognized as a pivotal figure in its development.

Mrs. Tinubu emphasized the importance of funding in overcoming barriers to women's empowerment in various sectors.

Her visit not only provided financial support but also encouraged Akwete weavers to embrace technology and artificial intelligence to improve their craft. She expressed her commitment to wearing Akwete attire, aiming to elevate its status and promote Nigeria's cultural identity.

This initiative is seen as a step towards enhancing women's roles in economic diversification and cultural diplomacy.
