Three Armed Robbers Sentenced to Death in Nigeria

On April 25, 2024, three armed robbers were sentenced to death by Justice William Olamid for their involvement in an armed robbery in Akur, Nigeria. The defendants were charged under Section 6(b) of the Armed Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges, which included overpowering a security guard and using an iron bar during the robbery. The first two defendants were arrested by police in Benin while in possession of a vehicle linked to the crime, and they reportedly confessed, leading to the arrest of the third defendant, alleged to be the mastermind.

The court found that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that the defendants acted in concert to commit the crime. Each defendant was sentenced to seven years in prison for the armed robbery, with the death penalty imposed for their roles in the conspiracy.
