Man Sentenced to Death for Robbing University Students

Kazeem Ayeni, aged 37, was sentenced to death by hanging by Justice Lekan Olatawura of the Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti Division, for armed robbery. The incident occurred on October 2, 2024, when Ayeni, armed with a pistol, robbed five students of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti, taking their phones valued at N680,000.

Justice Olatawura stated that Ayeni showed no remorse during the trial, which influenced the strict application of the law regarding armed robbery. The judge pronounced the sentence, saying, “May God have mercy on your soul.” One of the victims, Moyinoluwa Adewale, testified that Ayeni entered their room at approximately 9:10 PM, threatened them with a double-barrelled pistol, and demanded their phones.

The prosecution, led by Salem Bade-Gboyega, presented seven witnesses and various exhibits, while Ayeni, represented by lawyer Amir Salami, did not call any witnesses but pleaded for leniency.
