Tinubu administration reviving decades-old South-East road projects

Minister Dave Umahi says President Tinubu's government is completing highway infrastructure first conceived during colonial times but abandoned for decades.
President Bola Tinubu's administration is moving forward with major road construction projects across the South-East that have sat incomplete for generations, according to Minister of Works Dave Umahi. The official disclosed the development during a visit to Ebonyi State, where he toured infrastructure sites alongside state government officials.
The projects being revived were originally conceived more than 70 years ago during the colonial era but were never fully realised, Umahi explained. The most prominent undertaking is the Trans-Saharan Superhighway corridor linking Calabar, Ebonyi, and Benue, a route identified as strategically important for trade and economic activity across the South-East, South-South, and North-Central regions.
According to Umahi's statements, the revival of these long-dormant projects forms part of President Tinubu's Renewed Hope agenda. The Minister noted that work is already underway on multiple stretches, with steady progress being recorded despite ongoing challenges.
The Calabar-Ebonyi-Benue corridor is being highlighted as a flagship initiative expected to boost commercial connectivity across the three regions. The infrastructure push represents an attempt to address infrastructure deficits in the South-East that have persisted since independence.
Umahi, a former governor of Ebonyi State, told journalists that completing these colonial-era conceptions would unlock economic potential currently constrained by poor road networks. No specific timeline or budget figures were disclosed in the Minister's statements.
