Tinubu Urges Local Government Leaders to Drive Development

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed the chairmen of Nigeria's 774 local government areas during the maiden Annual National Conference in Abuja, charging them to implement the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda at the grassroots level. He highlighted that the autonomy granted to local governments comes with the responsibility to deliver measurable results in various sectors, including primary healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

Tinubu referenced the Supreme Court’s July 2024 judgment affirming local government financial autonomy, which places a significant responsibility on local leaders to demonstrate effective governance. He urged the chairmen to collaborate with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community groups to address grievances proactively and create a peaceful environment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The President warned against electoral violence, thuggery, and hate speech, emphasizing the need for local governments to actively participate in planning and service delivery, utilizing evidence-based decision-making and technology.
